Non-Fatal Strangulation Petition - Update
On Wednesday 17th September, our Founder and CEO, Fiona Drouet, met with the Lord Advocate to discuss the ongoing progress of our petition calling for non-fatal strangulation (NFS) to become a standalone criminal offence in Scotland.
Non-fatal strangulation is one of the strongest predictors of homicide in abusive relationships - victim/survivors are eight times more likely to be killed after being subjected to it. Beyond its immediate danger, NFS can cause devastating harm, including brain damage, organ failure, long-term psychological trauma, and even death. Victim/survivors frequently describe NFS as a near-death experience, with 80% reporting lasting physical or emotional impacts.
We are encouraged to see meaningful attention being given to this critical issue and look forward to further discussions that will help shape a safer Scotland.
